Tallinn University announces competition for a position of Research Professor of Legal Philosophy and Legal Theory.

The Tallinn University School of Governance, Law and Society (SOGOLAS) is a competence centre for social research and practices. The research and development activities at SOGOLAS focuses on key issues of the development of contemporary society and is characterized by a wide range of topics, which offers good opportunities for interdisciplinary research, a problem-centred approach and integration between SOGOLAS study areas and other units of Tallinn University. The institute has a broad international network which helps ensure high-quality research and teaching. Effective cooperation with external stakeholders enables SOGOLAS to play an active in policy making and innovative practice design.

Work assignments

The aim of research professor of Legal Philosophy and Legal Theory is to develop research-based teaching in the direction of legal philosophy and legal theory. Legal studies are grounded in theories of law and philosophy, which provide the foundation for other legal subjects and are a necessary component of legal education, forming the basis for the development of both private and public law. The aim of this professorship is to enhance the capacity and competence of the SOGOLAS with an internationally recognized expert.


The professor's responsibilities include advancing research in legal theories and philosophy, involving faculty members in research projects, and conducting related teaching and supervision of students at all levels of higher education. The research professor serves as a leader in research and development activities, as well as in social and institutional activities, seeking research funding in their field.


  • Teaching at all levels of higher education, at BA, MA and Phd levels.
  • Supervising students, especially MA and PhD students.
  • Planning and implementing research and development projects conducted by the institute.
  • Presenting at professional conferences.
  • Establishing and developing professional cooperation and partnerships with external institutions.


The duties are divided as follows: (1) research and development activities minimum 30%, (2) teaching activities 40%, and (3) social and institutional activity minimum 10%.

Education

Ph.D. in law or in social sciences.

Work experience


  • Completion of graduate studies abroad;
  • Experience in academic work in the field, both abroad and in Estonia.


Academic Activities:

  • Successful research activities, research results, and publications.
  • Significant proven knowledge in the field.
  • Experience in coordinating research projects, organizing conferences, and workshops.
  • Previous experience in applying for research funding.
  • Active membership in international professional and/or scientific organizations.
  • Participation in expert groups, editorial boards, or international conference program committees.
  • Long-term experience (at least 10 years) in teaching and supervising.


Leadership Experience:

  • Experience in curriculum development and management.
  • Experience in leading a department or academic area.
  • Experience in conducting and leading projects.

Language skills

Proficiency in English at a level necessary for teaching and research activities (C1).

Additional requirements

Candidate must meet the requirements for the position of Research Professor set out in Annex 4, 9 and 10 in the TLU Employment Regulations Rules.


The candidate is expected to have or be willing to acquire proficiency in Estonian within three years of taking up the position to participate in institutional activities, conduct teaching, and supervise in Estonian-taught programs within their field of expertise.
