The School of Natural Sciences and Health (LTI) is one of the six schools of Tallinn University. The School brings together a wide range of natural and health sciences, and its leading researchers make LTI a centre of competence in domain-specific knowledge and expertise.

The role of the School is to help understand the functioning of both humans and the environment, and to develop solutions that support human well-being and help preserve and shape the living environment. Modern laboratories and workshops support the development of research and provide opportunities to study and conduct research at all levels of higher education.

The School of Natural Sciences and Health conducts research and development in three academic areas: movement, health and sports sciences; natural sciences and sustainability education; and psychology and behavioural sciences. In addition, the institute includes the Institute of Ecology, whose main research focus is on coastal and wetland ecosystems.

Work assignments

The Professor of Applied School Psychology is responsible for the training of school psychologists and organising relevant research, enabling the acquisition of knowledge and skills at the level prescribed by the professional standard. The professorship covers teaching, research, and development activities in the areas of learner development, well-being, counselling, and school psychology.


Key responsibilities:

  • training school psychologists and organising relevant research, enabling the acquisition of knowledge and skills at the level prescribed by the professional standard
  • conducting research in the field of learner development and learning, with an emphasis on supporting the development of students with special educational needs (SEN) experiencing socio-emotional problems, as well as the broader well-being of learners, teachers, and families
  • coordinating and leading counselling training and the development of counselling methodologies
  • teaching across the Psychology BA, Psychology MA, and Psychology PhD programmes
  • fostering integration with other LTI research directions
  • applying for interdisciplinary research and applied projects (including collaborations with the private sector)
  • contributing to LTI activities primarily through participating in and leading interdisciplinary applied projects
  • advancing the field of psychology programmes
  • supervising doctoral students
  • participating in the development of psychology programmes, teaching, and supervising students
  • advancing school psychology and psychological counselling education within teacher education
  • participating in the development of the school psychologist profession, leading and contributing to the school psychologists’ professional qualification year, and supervising the activities of school psychologists
  • developing collaboration and networks with universities in the field of school psychology, both domestically and internationally
  • applying for international research projects

Education

Doctoral degree or equal qualification in the field of Psychology.

Work experience

A candidate shall meet the requirements for the position of a professor established in Annexes 2, 9 and 10 to the Employment Relations Rules.


Specific requirements arising from the nature of the field mandate the following competencies:

  • They must have appropriate experience working either as a school psychologist or as a counseling psychologist in a school setting
  • They must possess and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with other natural and behavioural sciences within the LTI and relevant fields in the School of Educational Sciences (HTI).
  • The candidate must have appropriate experience in research and applied projects, including participation in an international project in the field of school psychology.
  • The candidate must have an appropriate number of high-level publications and sufficient experience participating in applied and research projects in the field of school psychology.
  • The candidate must be proficient in the school psychologist professional certification system in Estonia, have sufficient experience working in the school psychologist certification committee, and in supervising the activities of school psychologists.
  • The professorship requires the establishment and coordination of research groups, making strong leadership skills desirable for the candidate.
  • The candidate is expected to possess the necessary skills to participate in academic and administrative decision-making bodies and committees within the LTI, TU, and external to the university.
  • The ability to work on projects with currently practising school psychologists and involve them in TU projects is essential.

Language skills

English language proficiency at the level required for teaching and research, at least C1; preference will be given to candidates who have at least a C1 level of proficiency in Estonian.

By default, successful candidates are appointed at the Associate Professor level. Candidates wishing to be considered for appointment as Professor must submit evidence demonstrating that they meet the requirements for this level, including proven experience in leading a research team.

The expected levels of qualifications, experience and performance are specified in Annexes 9 and 10 of Tallinn University’s Employment Regulations.
