The School of Natural Sciences and Health (LTI) is one of the six schools of Tallinn University. The School brings together a wide range of natural and health sciences, and its leading researchers make LTI a centre of competence in domain-specific knowledge and expertise.

The role of the School is to help understand the functioning of both humans and the environment, and to develop solutions that support human well-being and help preserve and shape the living environment. The School of Natural Sciences and Health conducts research and development in three academic areas: movement, health and sports sciences; natural sciences and sustainability education; and psychology and behavioural sciences. In addition, the institute includes the Institute of Ecology, whose main research focus is on coastal and wetland ecosystems.

Work assignments

The Professor of Legal Psychology is responsible for teaching, training, and conducting relevant research in legal psychology (including forensic psychology, psychological aspects of questioning litigation participants, penal policy, and well-being) within the psychology and well-being degree programmes. The professorship involves teaching, research, and development activities in legal psychology and contributing to interdisciplinary cooperation.


Key responsibilities:

  • teaching, training, and conducting relevant research in legal psychology within the psychology and well-being degree programmes
  • coordinating and conducting research projects in legal psychology
  • teaching across the Psychology BA, Psychology MA, Psychology PhD, Organisational Behaviour MA, and Health Behaviour and Well-being PhD programmes
  • contributing to the study of mental processes using experimental psychology methods as an essential competency in the preparation of psychologists
  • contributing to the continuous development of the Experimental Psychology Laboratory
  • applying experimental psychology and behavioural science methods in legal psychology research
  • further developing the activities of the Centre of Competence in Legal Psychology at the LTI
  • fostering integration with other LTI (and also School of Governance, Law and Society - ÜTI) research areas
  • developing interdisciplinary research and applied projects (including collaborations with the private sector)
  • contributing to LTI activities by participating in and leading interdisciplinary research projects
  • participating in the development of psychology programmes (including the creation of a Legal Psychology module on the Psychology MA programme and joint courses and/or modules with the law department in ÜTI)
  • teaching and supervising students
  • developing collaboration and networks in the field of legal psychology with universities and the private sector both in Estonia and abroad

Education

Doctoral degree or equal qualification in the field of Psychology.

Work experience

A candidate shall meet the requirements for the position of a professor established in Annexes 2, 9 and 10 to the Employment Relations Rules.


Specific requirements arising from the nature of the field mandate the following competencies:

  • The candidate must have a sufficient number of high-level publications and demonstrate applying and securing research funding at an appropriate level in legal psychology and cognitive psychology
  • The candidate must demonstrate teaching and supervision experience in legal psychology and related topics (cognitive and experimental psychology) at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to collaborate with other natural and behavioural science fields within the LTI.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated appropriate experience in leading and executing legal psychology research and applied projects.
  • As the candidate must have demonstrated international experience in professional cooperation, including experience working in international research project teams, leadership qualities are desirable for the candidate.
  • The candidate is expected to demonstrate the necessary skills to participate in academic and administrative decision-making bodies and committees within the LTI, ÜTI, TU, and external to the university.

Language skills

English language proficiency at the level required for teaching and research, at least C1; preference will be given to candidates who have at least a C1 level of proficiency in Estonian.

By default, successful candidates are appointed at the Associate Professor level. Candidates wishing to be considered for appointment as Professor must submit evidence demonstrating that they meet the requirements for this level, including proven experience in leading a research team.

The expected levels of qualifications, experience and performance are specified in Annexes 9 and 10 of Tallinn University’s Employment Regulations.
