Work assignments


The goal of the position is to develop research in the field of coastal oceanography at Tallinn University of Technology by setting up a research group which in addition to providing high level research output is also:

  • an effective partner for industry and public sector authorities in developing environmental monitoring services and; 
  • a contributor to higher education by teaching oceanography courses and supervising students. 


MAIN TASKS:

  • Carrying out and organisation of research and development in the field of coastal oceanography and leading related research projects.
  • Cooperation with other research and development institutions as well as with private companies and state authorities.
  • Development of infrastructure required for research in the field of coastal oceanography and marine monitoring (equipment for measurement campaigns etc). 
  • Raising additional funding (from outside the university) to support research activities related to coastal oceanography.
  • Publication of the research and development results in high quality journals (Q1).
  • Teaching, research and development activities in the field of oceanography in balanced proportions.
  • Supervision of students in conducting independent research.
  • Teaching (at bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral level) and development of studies by using up-to-date methodologies and educational technology in the field of oceanography.
  • Organizing, developing and being responsible for high level academic studies in the field of oceanography.
  • Expected directions of scientific research and development work: coastal currents; matter/energy transport (including upwelling/downwelling and tidal currents) in coastal sea; physical processes affecting matter transport; water dynamics in river estuaries; physical processes promoting the negative consequences of eutrophication (incl. harmful algal blooms and near-bottom oxygen deficiency) and anthropogenic processes affecting water column properties (e.g. sediment resuspension, impact of nuclear power plant cooling water, changes in wind stress in wind farm areas, changes in seabed configuration) in the Baltic Sea; introduction and application of novel and autonomous marine monitoring technologies (gliders, micro-AUVs, buoy stations with fixed and profiling sensors).
  • Designing and organizing oceanographic experiments.
  • Implementing autonomous measurement platforms in coastal seas for environmental studies. 
  • Participating in and leading applied research related to the assessment and monitoring of human impacts on marine environment.


Accompanying tasks: participation in the work of national and international professional decision-making bodies and committees; advising Estonian and European policymakers and representatives of the state in the fields of marine monitoring, coastal oceanography, and adaption to climate change; collaboration with scientific journal editorial boards, peer reviewing of scientific articles; popularisation of the marine environment related research in public domain; coordination of professional development courses.

Work experience

  • PhD degree in Earth sciences or natural sciences;
  • Previous international work experience in the field of research;
  • Experience in research and development as an applicant for a research projects and as a principal investigator (PI) of large projects;
  • Experience in pedagogic work, including supervising theses.
  • The level of scientific publications and number of citations is comparable to the ones of the professors in the same field at the reference universities of TalTech.
  • Effective supervision of doctoral theses (at least 2 successful defences).
  • Experience in applied research in assessing/monitoring human impact in the Baltic Sea.
  • Experience in organizing and leading international marine expeditions.
  • Experience in deploying autonomous measuring devices (gliders, micro-AUVs; moorings with fixed and profiling sensors) in the Baltic Sea.
  • Language skills required for the position: advanced Estonian and English. In case the candidate does not speak Estonian, then by the end of the first attestation period, during 5 years from taking up the position we expect Estonian language skills to be acquired at the level of B1.
