Professor of International Relations

Tallinn University announces competition for a position of Tenure Track Associate Professor (the position of Tenure System career level I).


Tallinn University is the largest humanities teaching university in Tallinn and the third largest public university in Estonia. The Tallinn University School of Governance, Law and Society (SOGOLAS) is a competence centre for social research and practices. The research and development activities at SOGOLAS focuses on key issues of the development of contemporary society and is characterized by a wide range of topics, which offers good opportunities for interdisciplinary research, a problem-centred approach and integration between SOGOLAS study areas and other units of Tallinn University. The institute has a broad international network which helps ensure high-quality research and teaching. Effective cooperation with external stakeholders enables SOGOLAS to play an active in policy making and innovative practice design.

Work assignments

The position of the Professor of International Relations would cover the topics of international politics in a way that would be compatible with the field of responsibility: international politics; state and other actors; world politics and worldwide governance; vulnerability of democracy.


The Professor of International Relations is expected to:

  • conduct high-level research and teaching in the field of international relations, especially in fields related to security research and create a research plan that leads to the publications in important international scientific journals;
  • lead research collaboration initiatives;
  • increase capacity to secure competitive funding in the field of the study area;
  • contribute to the administrative and developmental tasks of SOGOLAS.

Work experience

The most important requirements inherent in the specific nature of the field on the given position:

Academic Activity Requirements  

  • Strong research and publication track record;
  • experience in coordinating research projects, experience in organising international conferences and workshops;
  • experience in applying for research funding;
  • active membership in international professional and/or research organisations, expert groups, journal editorial boards, programme committees of international conferences;
  • substantial pedagogical experience in teaching and supervising; experience in organising societal outreach activities; (public events for dissemination);
  • experience in developing and running curricula.


Leadership aspects of the role

  • The position requires building and coordinating research teams. Thus it is expected that the candidate shows track record or ability to be a good communicator and skilled consensus builder and is experienced in and values interdisciplinary approach, showing good leadership qualities.

English on the level necessary for conducting teaching and research work: C1

Candidate must meet the requirements for the post of Tenure Track Associate Professor (Tenure System career level I) set out in Annex 2, 9 and 10 in the TLU Employment Regulations Rules.


Upon starting the position, the requirement is to learn Estonian language within 3 years.
