Professor of Science Education for Sustainable Development

Tallinn University announces competition for a position of Tenure Track Associate Professor (the position of Tenure System career level I).

Work assignments

The area of responsibility of the Professor of Science Education for Sustainable Development is the scientific and applied work and training in the area of Education for Sustainable Development.


  • The professor is tasked with introducing the best practices in the science teacher training, the developing and contributing to study programmes in science teacher training.
  • The professor teaches and instructs in the study programmes of Integrated Natural Sciences BA and Science Teacher MA.
  • In addition to that the professor contributes to the development and carrying out of the microcredentials, which are related to sustainable development and science education.


The strategic tasks of the professorship include:

  • development and information work in order to increase potential students’ interest towards science, science education and TU;
  • development of a modern base of testing tools for teaching, development and using the new study methods;
  • development of teacher training study programmes with the aim to provide the best preparation for future teachers;
  • increasing the popularity of teacher training through various measures among student candidates in order to ensure the succession of young teachers and the sustainability of the area;
  • cooperation and creation of relations in the area of didactics with other universities in Estonia and abroad, and applying for international research and development projects.


The professor’s scientific research area are Education for Sustainable Development and science education. 

Education

PhD degree in natural sciences or in educational sciences (science education).

Work experience

  • a candidate must be familiar with Information Communication Technologies (ICT) development trends and has demonstrated integration of ICTs into teaching;
  • a candidate must have more than one year practical experience in school (e.g. teaching or carrying out R&D activities);
  • preferably has participated in the development and/or piloting of new study materials;
  • has management experience at an educational institution or has mentoring experience at a school;
  • must have published publications in the area of science education or education for sustainable development;
  • has within the past 5 years participated in a research conference with a presentation.

Language skills

English on the level necessary for conducting teaching and research work (C1).

Additional requirements

Candidate must meet the requirements for the post of Tenure Track Associate Professor (Tenure System career level I) set out in Annex 2, 9 and 10 in the TLU Employment Regulations Rules.


The Estonian language skill is necessary for conducting studies for the students of the area and for developing and using the Estonian terminology of the area. The professor bears responsibility and works primarily in the fulfilment of Estonian language based study programmes in accordance with the contract under public law concluded between the MoER and TU (for training science teachers for Estonian schools). Proficiency in the Estonian language should be obtained within 3 years.
