Data Engineer

The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Tartu is seeking a Data Engineer to build the backbone of Estonia’s real-world health data infrastructure and to support the extraction, transformation, and optimization of large-scale healthcare data into the OMOP Common Data Model.

Work assignments

In this role, you will focus on improving existing data pipelines, ensuring high data quality, and enabling efficient, reproducible workflows that support research and data-driven decision-making. Moreover, you provide technical support for conducting federated studies. 

The main tasks are

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL pipelines to transform healthcare data into the OMOP Common Data Model.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and integrity across multiple data sources.
  • Clean, preprocess, and harmonize large-scale healthcare datasets.
  • Optimize and automate data workflows for scalability and performance.
  • Maintain and improve existing data pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with data analysts, clinicians, researchers, and IT specialists.
  • Implement best practices for reproducibility, versioning, and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection, security, and ethical requirements.
  • Support integration of new data sources, including registries and biobank/genetic data where applicable.

Education

Higher education (preferably Master's degree) in computer science, data engineering, software engineering, information systems, or a related field.

Work experience

  • Experience working with healthcare data and/or OMOP CDM (or willingness to learn).
  • Strong experience with SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience building and maintaining ETL/data pipelines.
  • Experience with analytical programming languages such as R (preferred) or similar.
  • Familiarity with data workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Luigi, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience in developing R packages and study packages for federated studies is a plus.
