Work assignments

Running from 2025 to 2029, SustainERA will combine high-level research with the development of innovative solutions to promote a sustainable mindset and practices. By integrating expertise from multiple disciplines and fostering international collaboration, the project also aims to enhance Tallinn University’s research excellence and capacity. Four doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers will be recruited through an international competition to complement the existing research team.

This postdoctoral research project examines how organisations transition toward sustainability through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks. The study will identify key drivers and barriers to sustainability-oriented change within organisations, employing a combination of surveys, case study analyses, and semi-structured interviews. Using European competence models (e.g., GreenComp, LifeComp), the project will develop flexible lifelong learning models that universities can tailor to various companies and assess their impact through intervention studies. Tallinn University will serve as one of the case studies, illustrating how ESG strategies can be implemented in a large public institution.

The successful candidate will work on the following tasks (but is not limited to):

  • Determine the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable effective ESG-driven change, reflecting SustainERA’s focus on individual-level enablers of sustainability.
  • Design and test flexible and research-based training programs tailored to different organisational maturity stages, promoting deeper engagement with sustainability principles and supporting SustainERA’s goal of influencing behaviour.
  • Conduct a detailed case study of higher education institutions’ ESG initiatives (organisational and eco-system aspects), comparing them with private-sector efforts to understand how sustainability practices differ across institutional contexts.
  • Explore the barriers to adopting sustainable mindsets and practices in organisations.

In addition to their postdoctoral research, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to various teaching, administrative, and capacity-building activities within the SustainERA project, including participation in writing grant proposals on related topics. These responsibilities will account for 20% of the workload. Candidates will be expected to reside and work in Tallinn.
