TalTech Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture invites applications to fill in a tenured professor position in the field of Environmental Architecture and Urban Space. The position will be filled in at the level of associate professor (tenured or tenure track) and the position is located in the Academy of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Work assignments


The goal of the position is organisation of research and teaching in the field of evidence-based design methods and respective environmental analyses of buildings and urban spaces.


RESEARCH:

  • Organise and lead research in environmental responsive architecture and urban design, emphasizing passive strategies, resource efficiency, well-being, and climate adaptation.
  • Maintain a strong record of publications in high-impact journals, present at international conferences, and secure competitive national and international research funding.
  • Collaborate with other departmental units on shared research areas such as energy, microclimate, and digital design.
  • Contribute to the international scientific community through research networks, grant evaluations, and editorial activities.


TEACHING:

  • Deliver innovative teaching in sustainable architecture and urban design, integrating environmental performance analysis, digital and parametric design tools, and real-world problem solving.
  • Supervise master’s and doctoral students to ensure timely completion of their research.
  • Mentor colleagues and participate in the development of teaching programs.


DEVELOPMENT & PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

  • Take a leadership role in the field of study within the department, organizing professional development and academic initiatives.
  • Promote the field through public engagement, conferences, and visibility-enhancing activities for the University.
  • Participate in professional bodies, scientific advisory boards, and editorial committees to advance the discipline.


Salary for the position is 3 500 €/month, with the possibility of additional remuneration contingent upon external research funding secured by the appointee.

Work experience

  • A PhD in architecture.
  • Substantial research experience in environmental responsive architecture and urban design, with a focus on the built environment in northern climates.
  • A strong publication record, equivalent in volume to at least three doctoral theses.
  • Proven success in securing competitive research funding as principal investigator and effectively conducting research projects.
  • Significant teaching experience (minimum 5 years) at undergraduate and graduate levels, including the development of course programs and pedagogical activities at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience in supervising master's and doctoral theses, including at least one successfully defended doctoral thesis as primary supervisor.
  • Expertise in integrating environmental performance analysis tools from building to urban scale with parametric design, and applying methods for evidence-based design, optimization, and design exploration.
  • Other academic merits, such as: conference presentations, international research collaboration, research dissemination, editorial or reviewer roles for scientific journals, membership in scientific committees, evaluator roles for international funding bodies, and development of design tools.
  • Language skills: Estonian* (intermediate), English (advanced).


*Candidates who do not possess an intermediate level of Estonian proficiency at the time of appointment are expected to attain this level within three years of assuming the position.
