Lecturer of International Relations

Tallinn University has announced a public competition for the position of Lecturer or Teaching Track Associate Professor in International Relations.


Candidates should hold a doctorate and give clear evidence of an emerging research focus in International Relations (IR). Expertise in all sub-disciplines of IR is welcomed but we are especially interested in critical IR perspectives broadly defined, and excellent grasp of IR theories and social science methods. The successful candidate should have evidence of emergent or excellent publishing outputs. Demonstrate that their research has contributed to theoretical, empirical, methodological or conceptual advancements in their field. The successful candidate will be able to deliver teaching in diverse BA and MA level programmes in politics, governance and international relations and supervise BA and MA theses in their area of expertise. The successful candidate also participates in research and development activities and is expected to undertake administrative duties commensurate with their role.

Work assignments

The general study area of International Relations and Future Studies are related to securing a wide-ranging and internationally recognized teaching, development and research activity on the areas of politics and international relations in Tallinn University, and to training professionals and leaders in public service and other roles utilizing politics and international relations competences in the public, private and third sectors. 



The main responsibilities of the Lecturer in International Relations are as follows:

  • Planning, organizing, and delivering BA and MA level teaching; supervising theses; and participating in student evaluations, including committees of both final defences and entrance exams of students.
  • Conducting high-quality research, publishing in international journals, applying for competitive grants, and actively engaging in academic networks.
  • Representing the university at conferences, contributing to public debates nationally and internationally.
  • Participating in institutional development and administration, including updating research profiles (e.g., ETIS) and supporting the development of the IR department.
  • Being regularly present on campus (at least two days per week) and available for student consultations (minimum two hours per week).


The duties are approximately divided in (1) research (30-40 %), (2) teaching (50-60 %) and (3) internal and external service (10%).

Education

PhD in international relations or other relevant fields (political science, sociology, anthropology, geography etc.)

Work experience


The candidate is expected to have:

  • emergent or solid research track record (provide one research output as a sample),
  • teaching experience at BA and MA level,
  • previous experience in designing courses and contributing to developing curricula is an advantage, 
  • the candidate is expected to lecture in English. 



Language skills

Proficiency in English (C1); Estonian (B1) to be acquired within 3 years to perform administrative duties.
