Professor of Applied Mathematics

The School of Digital Technologies at Tallinn University invites applications for a Tenure Track Professorship in Applied Mathematics. Applicants may apply for appointment at either career stage I (Associate Professor) or career stage II (Professor) within the tenure track system.

The Professor of Applied Mathematics is expected to make a long-term contribution to research and development activities, teaching, and institutional and societal engagement.


The purpose of the professorship is to advance high-level research and development in applied mathematics and to strengthen the role of applied mathematics in science, higher education, and society. The professor is expected to take a leading role in conducting internationally visible research, developing a research direction, and fostering the next generation of researchers through teaching and supervision. The position contributes significantly to the development of the School’s research and educational activities and to the promotion of academic collaboration both within and beyond the University.


The main duties of the professor are:

  • conducting internationally visible research in applied mathematics or related fields;
  • developing and leading a research direction or research group;
  • teaching and developing curricula at the Bachelor's level (particularly in the programme Mathematics, Economic Mathematics and Data Analysis) and contributing to the development of Master's level studies;
  • developing a Master's programme with a specialization in applied mathematics;
  • supervising students at the Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral levels;
  • applying for and managing competitive research projects;
  • collaborating with other research areas within the School and the University.


Approximate distribution of workload:

  • research and development: 50–60%
  • teaching and supervision: 25–35%
  • institutional and societal engagement: 10–20%


The work profile may be further specified depending on the professor's competencies and the School's development priorities.

Education

Candidate must hold a doctoral degree in mathematics or a closely related field (e.g., applied mathematics, statistics, data science/analytics, data analysis, operations research, mathematical economics).  

Work experience

A candidate shall meet the requirements for the position of a professor established in Annexes 2, 9 and 10 to the Employment Relations Rules.


We are looking for a candidate with an internationally visible research profile, demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and active participation in international research collaborations. The successful candidate has experience in teaching at the university level and supervising students at the Bachelor's, Master's, and/or doctoral levels. Experience in leading research projects and the ability to secure and manage competitive research funding are considered essential.


The following will be considered an advantage:

• experience in international research collaboration;

• interdisciplinary research and teaching experience;

• ability to develop new curricula and research directions.

Language skills

Advanced English proficiency (C1); Estonian as a working language, with advanced proficiency (C1) preferred. Candidates whose Estonian language skills do not meet the working language level are expected to be willing to acquire Estonian as a working language within three years of taking up the position.

By default, successful candidates are appointed at the Associate Professor level. Candidates wishing to be considered for appointment as Professor level must submit evidence demonstrating that they meet the requirements for this level, including proven experience in leading a research team.

The expected levels of qualifications, experience and performance are specified in Annexes 9 and 10 of Tallinn University’s Employment Regulations.
