The newly established Institute of Bioengineering is inviting applications for the position of Head of Innovation. As a key member of our team, you will play a pivotal role in driving sustainable innovation and fostering connections within the Estonian IT start-up sector.

Work assignments

  • Screening Emerging Technologies: You will evaluate cutting-edge technologies as part of the EC Horizon Teaming project DigiBio. Your focus will be on techno-economic and life cycle analysis, as well as guiding the process of intellectual property (IP) protection.
  • Market Assessment and Idea Selection: Assess potential technologies and act as a filter to select the most promising ideas for commercialization. Consider scalability, risk assessment, value proposition, and socio-economic impact.
  • Supporting Spin-Off Companies: Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) to evaluate techno-economic and life-cycle performance, market possibilities, and potential collaborators. Provide assistance to spin-off companies.
  • Investment and Funding Opportunities: Explore investment and funding opportunities, collaborating with incubators, business developers, industry partners, and academia. Establish long-term connections with the world-class Estonian IT start-up sector, its investors, entrepreneurs, and professionals.
  • Bioeconomy Development: Take an active role in the Bioeconomy Development Foundation (BDF), the business development arm of the Estonian Centre for Bioengineering (ECB). Develop a strategy for seeking and securing funding to boost the Estonian deep tech start-up sector in the field of bioengineering.
  • Establishment  of Start-Up platform: Lead the establishment and operation of a Start-Up platform in collaboration with the University of Tartu (UT), Tallinn University of Technology (TUT), and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Identify market potential, adequately protect intellectual property rights (IPR), and provide training in standard management, marketing, and financial literacy through outsourced workshops.

Education

At least a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.

Work experience

  • Professional experience in technology assessment, IP protection, and commercialization.

Very good spoken and written command of English.

Additional information

Additional information The DigiBio project will create a research and technology platform for data-driven disruptive bioengineering solutions to accelerate translation of science to manufacturing of next-generation bioproducts. The platform relies on the generation and analysis of big data through integration of automated genome engineering, phenotype screening, high-throughput analytics, and informatics. The Estonian Biofoundry is a member of the Global Biofoundry Alliance.
